choice

If you have been referred by your GP for an appointment with a healthcare provider, you may be able to book your appointment with NHS e-Referral Service. Most services are available via Choose and Book. You can choose the date and time of your appointment and your GP may be able to book your appointment there and then.

However, you have the right to think about your choices, compare different options and book your appointment at a later stage. If so, you’ll be given an appointment request letter, which includes your unique booking reference number, NHS Number and a list of hospitals or clinics to choose from. In addition you’ll be given a password, which allows you to book your appointment via NHS e-Referral Service either over the phone using The Appointments Line 0345 6088888 or online here.

What is NHS e-Referral Service

NHS e-Referral Service is the national NHS electronic booking system which is widely used by GPs to refer their patients.  It provides specific referral information to ensure patients are offered the most appropriate services for their treatment and enables referrers to give up-to-date details on appointment availability and waiting times.  It enables the fast, secure and confidential transfer of referral information directly from the GP practice to the hospital clinic consultants, with robust role based access controls restricting access to the system.

Patients are able to choose from a range of hospitals and other providers appropriate for their treatment, as well as select the date and time which is most convenient to them; either leaving the surgery with their appointment already booked or with details of how to contact the Appointments Line by telephone or book online.

The system gives patients a greater say in where and when they wish to be treated and means they no longer need to wait to receive an appointment from the hospital and can fit their appointments around their own commitments.
