The Healthworks

Health, Wellbeing and Employment Hub

Healthworks is a new initiative aimed at service alignment of a series of employment and health services, co-located within Blackpool town centre.  The idea arose from partners’ desire to realign existing services with new project opportunities to create a more efficient and user friendly hub.

Healthworks is proposed to be located in a disused former Council office building, left vacant following the centralisation of back-office services to the Central Business District.   The building will house delivery staff in a purpose designed facility including meeting and training rooms, confidential interview rooms, and an IT suite; helping to significantly improve standards of service and accessibility.

The combined services will be accessed through direct referral from GPs and other health and employment agencies such as Jobcentre Plus, as well as self-referral and drop-in at its central location.

These include (in no particular order):-

  • An integrated mental health and employment trailblazer (one of only 3 in the country)
  • Bespoke employment and enterprise support (via Work Programme, Healthy Futures, Chance2Shine and Get Started initiatives)
  • Health advice to inform residents’ healthy lifestyle choices (formerly the Wellness Service)
  • A specialist weight management service
  • Volunteering opportunities in support of work and healthy lifestyle goals
  • The Healthier Catering Awards – advice and awards to food businesses offering healthier options.

Key skills sets will include specialist employment and enterprise advisors, health trainers, dieticians, nutritionists, CBT therapists, counsellors, with access to other clinical specialists; together with dedicated project management.

The Healthworks is funded by Blackpool Council’s Economic Development and Public Health departments and Blackpool’s Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).  Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Trust (BTH) is a key delivery partner.   Co-funding for the Mental Health & Employment Trailblazer has been provided by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the European Social Fund (ESF).
