With temperatures continuing to soar across the Fylde Coast, local health chiefs are urging people to take precautions to avoid feeling unwell.

The Met Office has forecast temperatures reaching the high 20s for the Fylde Coast area over the next few days and while many people welcome the opportunity to enjoy this, hot weather does carry health risks – particularly for the elderly, the very young, and those who are seriously ill. Very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse.

The main risks posed by a heatwave are dehydration, over-heating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. NHS Blackpool Clinical Commissioning Group is therefore reinforcing heatwave health advice as temperatures continue to rise.

By following these tips, Blackpool residents can help keep themselves and their families well:

  • Avoid the heat: Try to stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. Protect against sunburn and use sunscreen of at least SPF15 with UVA protection.
  • Quench a thirst and drink plenty of cold fluids. Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol. If you feel dizzy or develop a headache try and rehydrate, using rehydration sachets from a pharmacy if necessary.
  • Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn’t possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make a room hotter).
  • Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need.
  • Take cool baths or showers.
  • Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if going outdoors.
  • Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.

Dr Amanda Doyle, a local GP and Chief Clinical Officer at NHS Blackpool CCG said: “Lots of us are quick to make the most of some sunshine, but it’s important to understand and be prepared for the damaging effects that the sun and heat can have on our health.

“If you are going to be out in the sun remember to use sunscreen; wear a hat and keep well hydrated. Should you get sunburnt , you need to stay out of the sun, take painkillers (like paracetamol or ibuprofen) and sponge your skin with cool water before applying aftersun or calamine lotion.

“If you feel unwell after spending time in the sun, find somewhere cool indoors to rest, drink plenty of fluids and have a cool shower or bath. If you are breathless, confused or dizzy, call NHS 111 or seek advice from your local pharmacy.”
