The Chief Clinical Officer of NHS Blackpool Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Amanda Doyle, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
The Order of the British Empire recognises Dr Doyle’s extraordinary contribution to primary care.
Dr Doyle said she was “surprised and delighted” at receiving the award. She added:
“For me personally, it is obviously a great honour. But I think the award is also recognition of the achievements of so many others who I have been privileged to work alongside in the challenge to improve health – not only in Blackpool but the country as a whole.
“To be honoured in this way comes as a wonderful surprise – it is not something you ever expect.”
Dr Doyle has been a GP for 18 years and is currently a partner in Bloomfield Medical Practice – based in one of the most deprived and health challenged areas in Blackpool. In addition to primary medical care, Bloomfield Practice provides a range of urgent care services across the community.
She has been involved in commissioning for more than a decade, initially as Medical Director with NHS Blackpool Primary Care Trust (PCT). It was in this position that she played a pivotal role in the development of three state-of-the-art primary care centres that revolutionised health services across Blackpool and paved the way for similar ways of delivery across the country.
In April 2013, Dr Doyle became Chief Clinical Officer of Blackpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) when the reorganisation of the National Health Service led to the responsibility for NHS funding moving from Primary Care Trusts to GPs.
She is co-chair of the Leadership Group of NHS Clinical Commissioners, regularly contributing to the regional and national health agenda.
Around 25 investitures are held every year, mostly at Buckingham Palace, but also at Windsor Castle and Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. As well as the Queen, they are at times performed by the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal or, more recently, Prince William.
Dr Doyle, who is married with four sons, says attending the ceremony will be one of the proudest moments of her career.
